MTC Y Draig Goch

The MTC Y Draig Goch is an ultra-distance running event held in Wales. The course covers a distance of approximately 34.8 miles (stated in some records as 47 miles), starting in Merthyr Tydfil and finishing at Barry Island. The route follows the National Cycle Route 8 through to the coast. This event is a quadrennial race, scheduled to take place every four years.

The competition serves as the final day of the CYMRUN challenge, a six-day end-to-end journey across Wales. Participants in this single-day event run alongside those completing the full multi-day series. The course features an ascent of approximately 2,392 feet and a descent of 2,913 feet.

The event follows a cup-free policy, meaning participants must provide their own reusable bottles or cups. Detailed course maps and GPX files are provided to registered entrants four weeks before the race. The organizers provide a tracking device to each runner to monitor progress and record timing. There are three intermediate checkpoints along the route located at:

  • Cilfynydd (9.8 miles)
  • Taff's Wells (17.8 miles)
  • Taff Embankment (25.3 miles)

All finishers receive a bespoke race medal. Specific trophies are awarded to the male and female champions. The event has a strict minimum pace requirement of 4 mph, and runners falling below this average may be withdrawn. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
