Montane Summer Spine Challenger South
The Montane Summer Spine Challenger South is a non stop, 108 mile race along the Pennine Way between Edale, Derbyshire and Hardraw, North Yorkshire. The route passes moorland including the Kinder Plateau and features National Parks, limestone features such as Malham Cove and the fell Pen-y-Ghent. The organiser sets a time limit of 60 hours.
The route has high cumulative ascent and descent, listed as 5451 metres ascent and 5449 metres descent. Typical June conditions are shown as daytime 5°C to 25°C and night-time 0°C to 10°C, with about 19 hours of daylight. Places available are limited to 150.
The event is described by the organiser as physically and psychologically demanding and requiring concentration, good physical fitness, resolve and respect. It is an unsupported race; participants may use cafes and pubs on the route but planned pacing, private support vehicles and organised external support are not permitted. Checkpoints provide services such as hot meals, hot and cold drinks, sleeping space, toilets, showers, professional medical crew, weather updates and resupply bag handling.
Entry requirements include a minimum age of 21 and relevant prior experience. Qualifying experience can include an ultra over 60 miles or previous completion of a Montane Spine race; other long distance or mountainous endurance events are considered.
