Mon & Brec Canal 40 Mile Race

The Mon & Brec Canal 40 Mile Race is a point-to-point running event that follows the historic Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. Starting in Malpas and finishing at Brecon Basin, the route leads participants through quiet countryside, border country, and the heart of the Brecon Beacons. The journey follows the canal towpath, passing locks, lift bridges, and waterside communities.

The course utilizes the firm and mostly flat surfaces of the towpath. Runners travel through open landscapes, farmland, hills, and valleys. There is an overall time limit of 15 hours to complete the distance, emphasizing steady progress and the experience of the surroundings rather than speed.

Participants can access three fully supported checkpoints along the route. These stations are managed by volunteers and provide snacks, fresh fruit, hot and cold drinks, seating, and power banks. The event is open to runners aged 18 and older.

The mandatory kit for all participants includes:

  • Water carrier (minimum 1 litre)
  • Mobile phone
  • Head torch or light source
  • Survival bag or bivvy bag
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Rucksack or running pack
  • Suitable trail or road footwear

Registration includes a commemorative finish memento and post-run care at the finish line. The event is professionally organized and community-led, providing a supported environment for all entrants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
