MMT Training Academy Run 1 - Caroline Furnace to Signal Knob

This is a point to point supported training run covering roughly the first third of the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 course. The route begins at Caroline Furnace Camp and finishes in the Signal Knob area, following primarily mountain trails for a total of 32 miles. Total ascent is listed at about 4,600 feet with total descent near 5,000 feet.

The course is not fully marked; trail blazing marks only the trail portions. A detailed turnsheet and a GPX file are provided for navigation and runners are advised to familiarize themselves with the route ahead of time and to carry the turnsheet and a navigation device. Two club aid stations are placed on course at Edinburg Gap (about 11 miles) and Woodstock Tower (about 19.2 miles). The club will supply only minimal common aid; runners are expected to provide most of their own food and drink.

Runners should prepare for winter mountain conditions and carry extra layers for weather changes or to manage an injury. Each runner is asked to bring two personal aid bags in quart or gallon zip lock bags, clearly labeled and containing food or drink to be left at the two aid stations; these bags are not for clothing or valuables and will be returned to the finish late in the day. The event requires a car shuttle to move runners to the start and uses volunteer support at shuttles and aid stations.

This is a club event in remote terrain with no medical personnel or supplies provided along the course. Runners are responsible for their own health and emergency care, and should plan accordingly for the risks of winter mountain running.
