Medieval Backyard Ultra

The Medieval Backyard Ultra is an elimination race where competitors must complete a fixed loop of 6706 metres (4.167 miles) in less than one hour. Runners repeat the same distance each hour, on the hour, until only one person completes a loop more than everyone else and is declared the winner. Any unused time at the end of a lap may be used for recovery or refuelling. Organisers give 3, 2 and 1 minute warnings before each start. Any runner not in the starting corral at the bell or who fails to finish the loop within the hour is withdrawn.

The event is based at the Medieval Village, Cosmeston Lakes, Cosmeston Country Park, Penarth CF64 5UY. Arrival and registration are available on Friday 23 April 2027 and the race takes place on Saturday 24 April 2027. The route follows mixed trail paths with about 171 ft of elevation gain per lap. Event headquarters offer plumed toilets, charging points, an indoor shelter for unsupported runners, and camping at the start/finish area; camping excludes camper vans and requires a tent. Parking is limited.

Included in entry are chip timing, a fully marked route, event team support (first aid and marshals), a log slice medal, a medieval wooden beaker, hot and cold water from burco boilers, and basic supplies. Entry fees are Early Bird £85 (closes 01/07/2026) and Standard £95. Runners must complete a waiver at registration and follow the posted race rules, including no personal aids during a loop and no non-competitors on course.
