The South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge is a trail event taking place on Saturday, 25 July 2026. The basecamp is located in Dunster, in the shadows of Dunster Castle. The event is part of the Ultra Challenge® series.
Distances and Route
Participants can choose from several distances, all starting and finishing at the Dunster basecamp.
- A 50 km loop route with approximately 1600 metres of climb. The route takes in the first Minehead section of the South West Coast Path and heads over Exmoor.
- A 25 km loop route with approximately 600 metres of climb.
- Two separate 25 km point-to-point routes that form halves of the 50 km loop: one along the coastal path to Porlock, and one from Porlock over Exmoor back to basecamp.
- A 10 km loop route around the Deer Park next to Dunster Castle, described as family-friendly.
Participation and Support
The event is open to walkers, joggers, and runners, and can be undertaken as an individual or a team. New for 2026 is the Ultra Trailblazerz® category for faster, competitive runners aiming for specific time goals. There is also an Ultra March® option for walkers aiming to complete the 50 km in under 12 hours. A 'Solo Challenger' start time is available.
Event support includes fully signed routes, rest stops approximately every 12.5 km with food and drink, medical and massage teams, and GPS tracking via a mobile app. Parking and shuttle bus transfers are available. Weekend camping packages are offered at the basecamp, which features a bar and festival-style hospitality. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
