South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge

The South West Coast 50 is a trail event based at Dunster basecamp on the South West Coast Path and across parts of Exmoor. It takes place on Saturday 25 July 2026 and offers looped and point-to-point options around Dunster and Porlock.

Distances and key route facts

  • 50 km loop with approximately 1600 m climb.
  • 25 km option with approximately 600 m climb.
  • 25 km second half option over Exmoor with approximately 1000 m climb.
  • 10 km loop around the Deer Park near Dunster Castle.

Event services and logistics

Rest stops appear at about every 12.5 km with larger marquee rest stops at roughly every 25 km. Catering includes snacks and meals, energy drinks, and options for different dietary requirements. Medical, first aid, podiatry, and massage teams are available at rest stops, and there is GPS tracking and a fully signed route with progress scanned at rest stops.

Participant options and facilities

The event offers camping packages, weekend basecamp facilities, parking and shuttle transfers to local stations and start points. Entry categories include Solo Challenger starts, an Ultra March category for walkers aiming for time targets, and the Ultra Trailblazerz category for faster, time-targeted runners. Trail runs nearby

A trail running event using a heritage steam train between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard, offering 11 km, 11 mile and marathon options. Routes include the Quantock Hills ridgeline and sections of the Steam Coast Trail and England Coast Path.

Three coastal trail races of 32.5, 18.5 and 10 miles follow the Wales Coast Path along the Vale of Glamorgan, with waymarked routes, staffed checkpoints, and coach transport for the linear course finishing at Ogmore-by-Sea.

A 15 miles fell race on the Mendips with over 2,000 feet of climbing and a fully marked Category B course. The route starts on Warrens Hill and finishes at Fairlands School where tea and cake are provided.

Experience the dramatic coastline and steep moorland of Exmoor National Park across five trail distances. Run past towering cliffs and through the Valley of Rocks on technical terrain starting from Lynton.
