Medicine Run Ultra & Relay

This is a trail running event held at Kihcihkaw Askî - Sacred Land, Fox Drive Northwest, Edmonton, AB, Canada. The course uses both single track and double track trails through the Edmonton River Valley.

Distances available include:

  • 5 km for youth and elders
  • 25 km solo and relay
  • 50 km solo and relay
  • 50 mile solo
  • 75 km solo and relay
  • 100 km solo and relay

The event is based on 12.5 km loops that solo runners and teams repeat. The format allows participants to cover up to 100 km. Relay teams must have at least two registered members; maximum team sizes are four for 50 km, six for 75 km and eight for 100 km. Each runner must complete their 12.5 km loop before the next runner begins. A hand carved wooden feather is passed from one runner to the next during exchanges.

Runners retrieve a prayer flag at the farthest point of the loop and return it to the start/finish area for a stamp and time recording for each completed loop. Timing is done by hand and the event states there are no hard cutoffs. Aid stations are stocked with a variety of food and drinks. Required or recommended gear includes a headlamp for night running, whistle, hydration and a phone. Parking is available 24 hours at Kihcihkaw Aski. Porta potties are located at Kihcihkaw Aski and Snow Valley. Teams may set up one tent per team no larger than 10 x 10 ft. If it rains the course will move off single track and use an extended double track out-and-back of 6.25 km to preserve the 12.5 km loop.
