Medicine Run Ultra & Relay

The event takes place at Kihcihkaw Askî - Sacred Land, Fox Drive Northwest, Edmonton, AB, Canada. It uses 12.5-kilometre loops that can be repeated to reach up to 100 kilometres within about 24 hours. A 5K option is offered for youth and elders, alongside multiple ultra and relay distances.

Distances offered:

  • 5 km for youth and elders
  • 25 km
  • 50 km
  • 50 mile
  • 75 km
  • 100 km

Racing formats include solo and relay entries. Relay teams must have a minimum of two registered teammates. Maximum team sizes are specified: 4 for the 50k, 6 for the 75k, and 8 for the 100k. Each runner must complete their 12.5 km loop before the next runner starts; the relay handoff includes carrying a hand-carved wooden feather between runners.

The course combines single-track and double-track trails through the Edmonton River Valley. Participants retrieve a prayer flag at the farthest point of the loop and return it to the start/finish to receive a stamp and record a finished loop before the next runner goes out. Aid stations are stocked with hot and cold options and snacks. Mandatory gear includes a headlamp if running at night, a whistle, hydration, and a phone for communication. Parking is available throughout the 24 hours, portable toilets are located at Kihcihkaw Askî and Snow Valley, and one team tent per team (max 10 x 10 ft) is allowed. In case of rain, single-track sections will be bypassed and a 6.25 km out-and-back on double track will extend the loop to maintain the 12.5 km distance. Organizers state there are no hard cutoffs and timing will be done by hand. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
