5 Peaks Chickakoo at Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area, Parkland County AB
The fourth race in the Northern Alberta 5 Peaks Trail Running series takes place at Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area in Parkland County, about 30 minutes west of Edmonton. The park covers 480 acres of woods and lakes and attracts a variety of birds and wildlife such as moose, deer, and beavers.
The course leaves the main parking area and quickly moves into singletrack. The route is known for sustained hill climbs, technical singletrack, steep downhills, and fast hard pack sections. Near the end, runners pass a ridge that provides views before descending back to the start and finish area.
Course distances and maps are provided and may change based on trail conditions up to race day. Listed distances include:
- Kid's Run 1 km
- Sport Run or Hike 7.8 km
- Enduro Run or Hike 13.6 km
The event is cup free; water and an electrolyte drink are available at the start and finish and at one or more aid stations on course. Participants expected to be out longer than an hour are advised to carry a receptacle for fluids and calories. Parking at Chickakoo is limited and some vehicles may need to use the equestrian parking area and walk to the start. Spectators are welcome with best viewing from the start and finish area. Sport and Enduro finishers receive a finisher item and wooden medals are available for purchase and must be picked up at the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
