5 Peaks Chickakoo : Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area

The fourth race of the Northern Alberta 5 Peaks Trail Running series takes place at Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area in Parkland County, about 30 minutes west of Edmonton. The site covers 480 acres of woods and lakes and attracts a variety of birds and wildlife such as moose, deer and beavers.

The race route includes grinding hill climbs, technical singletrack, steep downhills and fast hard pack sections. The start and finish are located at the main parking lot; runners move quickly into the park and through singletrack. Near the end, the last climb reaches a ridge with views before descending back to the start. Routes may be changed based on trail conditions.

Distances offered:

  • 1 km Kid's Run
  • 3 km Kid's Run
  • 7.8 km Sport Run or Hike
  • 13.6 km Enduro Run or Hike

Washroom facilities are available at the start and finish area. Parking is limited and participants may need to use the equestrian parking lot and walk to the start. This is a cup free event; water and electrolyte drink are available at the start, finish and at one or more aid stations. Participants planning to be out longer than an hour should carry a receptacle for drinking and carrying calories and electrolytes. For safety reasons, dogs, headphones, strollers or baby joggers and nordic walking poles are not allowed on course. Finishers of the Sport and Enduro events receive a finisher swag item; finishers can purchase sustainably sourced wooden medals on site or in advance. Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each age and gender category and to the top three overall. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
