McKay Hollow Madness

McKay Hollow Madness is a trail running event near Huntsville, Alabama on Monte Sano offering two distances. The courses are mostly single-track trail and include technical sections, climbs, and steep descents.

Distances:

  • 25K (about 15.5 miles) mostly single-track trail.
  • 12K (about 7 miles) mostly single-track trail.

The routes pass through named sections such as Sinks Trail, Panther Knob, Stone Cuts, Mountain Mist, Goat Trail, Warpath Ridge, McKay Hollow, Arrowhead, and Natural Well Trail. At about 6.5 miles the two distances diverge; 12K runners follow a climb out of McKay Hollow on the section known as Death Trail. Rain may make the course muddy and include wet terrain.

Aid stations: the 25K has two aid stations and the 12K has one. The first aid station is near O'Shaughnessy Point at roughly 5.1 miles and the second is at the Trough Springs Trailhead at roughly 9.8 miles. This is a cupless event; participants must carry a handheld bottle or a hydration bladder. Light aid station fare will be available.

There are strict cutoff times at both aid stations; arriving after a cutoff will prevent continuation and transportation back to the trailhead will be provided. Medical assistance is provided by HEMSI and the Huntsville Cave Rescue Team. Packet pickup is available the morning of the race. Those registering after March 1 may not receive a t-shirt.
