General Information
The Blue Heron Hundreds is an ultramarathon event held at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Mooresville, Alabama. The event includes distances of 100 miles, 100K, and 50K. A donation from the race will be made to the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association.
Course Information
The event takes place on soft crushed gravel and dirt roads within the wildlife refuge. The course is a 15.5-mile core loop that runners repeat. This loop is designed to pass through areas known for birding and wildflower viewing.
- 100 mile: 6 loops (with the final loop being a 7-mile variation).
- 100K: 4 loops.
- 50K: 2 loops.
The cutoff time for all events is 31 hours. Aid stations will be placed along the loop and will provide water, electrolyte drinks, soda, and various snacks like chips, candy, PB&J sandwiches, cookies, and pretzels. Two specific aid stations will also offer hot food such as soup, potatoes, and quesadillas, as well as coffee. Portable toilets will be available at the start/finish area and at one aid station on the loop.
Event Details
All three races share a common start time. Pacers are allowed for 100-mile and 100K runners, beginning at approximately mile 47. Runners in the 100-mile and 100K events can use one drop bag, which will be placed at two aid stations accessible twice per loop. Crew access for all runners is permitted only at the start/finish area.
Finishers in all distances receive a Blue Heron medal. Additional awards include a custom belt buckle for 100-mile finishers and special awards for the overall male and female winners in each distance.
