Little Blackfoot 15K and 30K

Little Blackfoot is a pair of out and back trail races near Kading Campground at the end of Little Blackfoot River Road. The event offers two distances:

  • 15 km out and back to Blackfoot Meadows.
  • 30 km continues past the start on Kading Grade to a Continental Divide view.

All runners start together and follow a short road section to the Little Blackfoot Meadows trailhead. The trail includes short climbs, lush forest, and two wooden bridge crossings over a creek before reaching the 15 km turnaround. 30 km runners pass through the start area, cross the road, and climb Kading Grade for a higher viewpoint before returning the same way.

Directions note that the drive from Helena takes about 45 to 60 minutes, heading west on Highway 12 over MacDonald Pass, then following Little Blackfoot River Road and signs to Kading Campground or Kading Cabin. The last several miles are dirt but usually passable; four wheel drive is not necessary. Parking is along the road and should be done carefully.

Post race provisions include bagels, fruit, non-alcoholic beverages and microbrews, plus overall and age-group prizes and raffle items donated by Helena businesses. Race notes advise preparedness for variable mountain weather, awareness of wildlife, and carrying appropriate safety gear for a remote course.
