All courses run on unpaved mountain trails and primitive roads. Trail types include very technical single track, primitive or double track jeep road, and a short section of maintained Forest Service road on the longest course. Terrain features include rock, forest, meadows, creek crossings, a historic ghost town and cemetery, and a mountain lake. Trail sections are closed to motorized vehicles and vehicle access to primitive road sections is difficult.
Course statistics and aid station info vary by distance. The 50 mile course lists about 37 miles of technical single track, roughly 13 miles of jeep road, about 13,400 feet of elevation gain, maximum elevation just under 9,000 feet, and eight aid stations with the longest gap about 7 miles. The 50 K includes roughly 27 miles of single track, about 3 miles of jeep road, about 7,900 feet of elevation gain, maximum elevation around 8,000 feet, and five aid stations with the longest gap about 8 miles. The 13.1 mile course is 100 percent technical single track with about 3,300 feet of gain, maximum elevation near 7,200 feet, and two aid stations with the longest gap about 6 miles.
Races start and finish at the Willard Creek Trailhead at the end of Forest Service Road 4014. The event is held in remote backcountry and may be changed to a self supported format or cancelled depending on seasonal fire restrictions or smoke conditions.
