Lecompton UMC 5K Walk/Run

The event is the third annual 5K Walk/Run held at a family ranch near Lecompton, Kansas, and it benefits the General Fund of the Lecompton United Methodist Church. The course moves through a different section of the ranch than prior years, following fence lines that make the route easy to follow.

The route passes through prairie grass used to feed cattle, across rolling hills and wide open pasture. Terrain is gentler than in past years but remains varied; the surface is rocky in places while still described as manageable for a range of fitness levels. The course goes near one pond and over to a creek area, with fewer trees along parts of the route so racers will have wider sight lines. The ranch is in its sixth generation and sits between the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, providing historical context to the setting. Organizers note photographic opportunities on a May morning.

Registration details include a fee of $35 before May 25 and $40 after May 25. Registration opens April 7 and closes May 24. At the finish, participants receive a complimentary 2 Trails beef burger, chips and a bottle of water. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
