Kettlefoot at Doe Mountain Recreation Area

Kettlefoot is a trail running event at Doe Mountain Recreation Area near Mountain City, Tennessee. Races are offered on natural and varied terrain with sustained climbing and panoramic viewpoints, including access to the 60 foot Kettlefoot Fire Tower with 360 degree views across Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. The event is USATF sanctioned.

Distances

  • 50K, ~31 miles, ~5,500 ft elevation gain, 10.5 hour cutoff
  • 25K, ~15 miles, ~2,750 ft elevation gain, 7.5 hour cutoff
  • 13K, ~8.8 miles, ~1,600 ft elevation gain, 4 hour cutoff

Registration is handled online through UltraSignup; there is no paper registration. The entry fee covers use of the facility, aid stations, a finisher award, and post-race food. Event t-shirts are available as an add-on.

Refund and transfer policies are stated by the organizer: no refunds; transfers to another runner within the same year are allowed until May 22, 2027; pregnancy and postpartum deferral is permitted for up to two years under Trail Sisters approved standards. Volunteers receive a t-shirt and post-race food.

Doe Mountain Recreation Area is near Mountain City and within driving distance of nearby towns. Vehicle camping on DMRA property is possible by arrangement with the race director, and several commercial campgrounds are nearby. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.

Trail runs nearby

Three nights of camping and three days of organized mountain trail runs near Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, with guided routes, basic cabin options, and GPX maps provided. Food and transport are not included.

Races and a hike at Hungry Mother State Park on July 25, 2026 include a one lap 15 mile mountain race plus 8 mile options along lakefront trails. Post-event awards, refreshments, live music and games are planned.

A 5K out and back run and walk on the Creeper Trail in Damascus, Virginia, on July 25, 2026. Organized by the Penny F. Garrett Sarcoma Foundation, with proceeds directed to rare cancer research at MD Anderson.

Experience a technical mountain race at Grandfather Mountain featuring fixed ropes and ladders. This 14 mile course climbs the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Range twice for a true Appalachian trail adventure.
