Grand-Further Mountain Run : Grandfather Mountain, NC
The Grand-Further Mountain Run is a single-course mountain race that climbs Grandfather Mountain twice, approaching the summit from both sides. The race distance is approximately 14 miles with about 4,200 feet of elevation gain. Much of the route is technical trail featuring roots, rocks, boulders, fixed ropes, and ladders on near-vertical sections.
The course contains roughly 13.4 miles of singletrack and about 0.25 miles of pavement. A six-hour time limit is in place. Aid stations are located along the course (miles 3.2, 6.8, and 10.6) and provide at minimum water and Skratch, plus snacks such as bananas, potato chips, pretzels, and M&Ms. Runners must meet course cutoffs to continue; runners who miss a key checkpoint are escorted down trail and returned to the start area.
Event logistics include a set race date of August 22, 2026, and the start/finish at the Profile Trailhead in Grandfather Mountain State Park. Registration opens July 4 and the entry fee is $95. The event limits entries to 200 participants. Refund and transfer policies apply: 50% refund available through July 24, no refunds within 30 days, and no transfers or deferments.
Packet pick-up is offered in downtown Boone and on race day. Prior trail running experience is required. Mandatory gear includes a rain shell, at least a 20 oz water-carrying device, an emergency blanket, and a cell phone. Additional race rules require staying on marked trails, carrying mandatory gear, and no alcohol or littering within park boundaries.
Awards are given to top overall finishers and all finishers receive a custom ceramic finisher medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
