The Grand-Further Mountain Run

The Grand-Further Mountain Run is a mountain race held at Grandfather Mountain State Park in North Carolina. The course spans approximately 14 miles (25 kilometers) and involves climbing the 5,945-foot peak twice, approaching from both sides of the mountain. Participants encounter approximately 4,200 feet of elevation gain across a route that consists almost entirely of single-track trails.

The terrain is extremely technical and includes roots, rocks, and boulders. Certain sections of the trail feature fixed ropes and ladders installed on near-vertical slopes to assist runners in navigating the steep ascent. Due to the nature of the course, prior trail running experience is required for all participants. The event has a total time limit of 6 hours and is limited to 200 participants.

There are three aid stations located along the course at the following intervals:

  • 3.5 miles
  • 7.1 miles
  • 10.7 miles

These stations provide water, Skratch hydration, and various snacks such as bananas, potato chips, pretzels, and M&Ms. Runners are required to carry mandatory gear at all times, including a rain shell, an emergency blanket, and a device capable of carrying at least 20 ounces of water. In the event of extreme weather, the race may be rescheduled to the following day.

Packet pick-up is available the evening before the event at a local running store in Boone or at the start/finish area on the morning of the race. All participants must check in before the start and present their required gear for inspection. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
