JP's Backyard Ultra - The Final Edition
JP's Backyard Ultra is a community ultramarathon and hike held at Skyline Wilderness Park in Napa, CA (2201 Imola Avenue). The event benefits the Pheo Para Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 26-1510652) that supports research and resources for paraganglioma and related conditions.
The course is a 3.3-mile loop with 550+ feet of climbing, featuring a mix of steep rocky sections and shaded paths. Participants may complete anywhere from one to ten loops. The format uses repeating hourly loops with direction alternating between clockwise and counterclockwise on successive circuits; completing ten loops yields approximately 33.3 miles.
A main camp aid station offers a variety of caloric options and drinks; water is available at the bridge and at mile 2.3. Food and beverages, including lunch for participants and volunteers, are provided. This is a cupless event, so participants should bring a water bottle or hydration pack.
All medals, food, and many event items are donated. Medals are awarded to all participants; additional medals, wine, trophies, and special awards are given to top finishers in multiple loop categories and for the fastest cumulative and final loops. Raffle baskets and a silent wine auction are held to raise funds for the Pheo Para Alliance. Participants are asked to follow park rules, stay on marked trails, carry out trash, and note that camping reservations are handled through Skyline Wilderness Park.
