Jarmans Invitational Marathon
The Jarmans Invitational Marathon is a backcountry endurance event in Crozet, Virginia, run on a repeated out and back lap on Jarman's Gap Road. The route climbs approximately 2.9 miles with about 1,522 feet of elevation gain, then returns the same distance; runners complete five laps for a total of roughly 29.0 miles and about 7,610 feet of cumulative elevation gain and loss.
The surface is steep gravel with stretches in shade and stretches in full sun. The summit area is described as a muddy parking spot with an "End State Maintenance" sign. The course passes a train crossing and may include loose dogs and roadside litter. Weather in early August can include high heat and sun exposure and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms; if thunderstorms do not occur the road may be dry and dusty.
Aid stations will provide warm water and likely some food; staffing may vary by location with a possibility that the top water station is unstaffed. There is no parking at the start; organizers plan a shuttle from the Greenwood Community Center about one mile away and note that Chiles Peach Orchard cannot be used for parking.
The event is presented as a low key "fatass" run with a small entry fee of $10 to open the waitlist feature. Entry is limited to 65 runners on a first come, first served basis with a waitlist used to fill openings. Prizes are awarded to overall male and female winners and to age group winners.
