The Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB is a trail running event held in Natural Chimneys Park, Virginia. The event takes place in September and its course travels through the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, west of the Shenandoah Valley. The run features views of the Appalachian Mountains and fall foliage.

The event offers four race distances: 100 miles (167.4 km), 100 km, 50 km, and 21 km. Each distance has a different amount of elevation gain. Finishers of the races earn "Running Stones" which can be used for entry into the UTMB World Series Finals lottery.

Race Experience

The event is part of the UTMB World Series. It is described as a dual qualifier, offering automatic qualification for the UTMB World Series Finals to the top three male and female finishers in the 100M, 100K, and 50K distances. It also serves as a qualifier for the Western States Endurance Run.

Registration includes a race bib, shirt, personal cup, aid station access, timing, medical assistance, and post-race food. A 41.4 mile trail ultra in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley featuring about 8,000 feet of climb, six fully stocked aid stations, notable natural landmarks, and a 125 runner field limit. Crews and pacers are not allowed.

A hilly 3k 6k and 9k loop around Mountain and Vine Vineyards with chip timing, a finisher medal and a glass of wine. Points count toward several yearlong series and the event supports the local volunteer fire department.
