Hunter S. Thompson Fear & Loathing : December 7, 2025

The event in San Francisco offers two distances:

  • 50 miles
  • 50K

This edition is listed as the 41st running since 1985. Entry is free and the event is organized in a grassroots "fat ass" format with no official awards. It is presented by local running groups and has been held annually with some gaps. The race is a single-loop urban course that visits many city landmarks and returns to Twin Peaks.

Course and logistics

The course starts and finishes at Twin Peaks and is almost entirely on city streets. Reported elevation change is about 3,600 feet of climb and 3,600 feet of descent; the high point is about 847 ft (Twin Peaks) and the low point is about 10 ft (Marina Green). The 50-mile race has an 11-hour time limit and a checkpoint cutoff at mile 25; runners who miss the 25-mile cutoff are directed to the 50K route. Aid support is voluntary and not guaranteed; aid points are mostly supplied from parked cars at approximate mile locations including Twin Peaks, Cesar Chavez / 3rd St, Japantown (Geary & Webster), Coit Tower (Grant & Lombard), Marina Green, Seacliff (30th Ave & El Camino del Mar), Lake Merced, Sunset Blvd, and Stanyan St. The organizers provide maps and turn sheets and note a small additional loop added from 2024 to ensure a full 50-mile distance. The event supports the Shoes For Runners charity. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
