Hunter S. Thompson Fear and Loathing

Hunter S. Thompson Fear and Loathing is an urban ultra held in San Francisco with a start at Twin Peaks. The event is presented by several running groups and offers two main distance options:

  • 50 Miler
  • 50K

The course is a single loop that passes many city tourist spots. Runners begin from the Twin Peaks vista and navigate streets and neighborhoods, with route-finding and getting lost described as part of the experience. The event follows a "fat ass" format with an ethos of No Fees, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps, although volunteers typically provide aid from parked cars at approximate mile points.

Aid is not guaranteed but has historically appeared near locations such as Twin Peaks, Cesar Chavez / 3rd Street, Geary & Webster, Coit Tower, Marina Green, the Seacliff/30th Avenue area, Lake Merced, Sunset Boulevard, and Stanyan Street. There is a cutoff at mile 25; participants who meet the cutoff may continue toward the 50 mile distance, while others are directed to the 50K route.

The event serves as a qualifier for the Ohlone Wilderness 50K Trail Run. Starting in 2024, 50 mile participants are asked to complete an additional 0.67 mile hourglass loop around Twin Peaks after returning to ensure a full 50 mile distance. The event supports the charity Shoes For Runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
