Heptonstall Fell Race

The Heptonstall Fell Race is a category BL event situated in the upper Calder Valley. Participants navigate a 25 kilometres course that traverses the diverse landscapes around Heptonstall, featuring a combination of steep wooded valleys, upland pastures, and pathless moorland areas.

The race begins on the ancient cobbled main street of the village. The route involves various terrains, including grassy slopes, sections of bog, heather, and dense woodland. These paths offer expansive views of the South Pennines countryside. Registration takes place in the local church, located adjacent to the starting area.

This event is organized as a not-for-profit community initiative by local enthusiasts. All proceeds from the race are donated to community organizations, including the Scouts, Guides, local church, Mountain Rescue, and CROWs.

  • The race follows FRA rules.
  • Mandatory kit includes full waterproof body cover, hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle, and emergency food.
  • Minimum age for participants is 18 years on the day of the event.

Entry includes refreshments such as tea and flapjacks at the finish line. Additionally, a prize giving session featuring Thai curry is held at the village pub following the conclusion of the race.
