The Freedom Run takes place on July Fourth in conjunction with the July Fourth festivities in Newport and Derby. The event is a run/walk held on a gravel bike path and wooded trails.

Course, amenities and charity

A Half Marathon distance was added last year, expanding course views to include Lake Memphremagog and the islands of Derby Bay. The event provides post-run ice cream and watermelon.

The run is held in memory of a local recreation director. Twenty percent of all fees are dedicated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness Vermont to support suicide prevention efforts. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
