Westmore Mountain Challenge
The Westmore Mountain Challenge is a one day trail event that crosses five mountains in Vermont: Moose, Hor, Pisgah, Haystack, and Bald. The full route covers about 26 miles with a cumulative elevation gain of approximately 6142 ft. The course travels on public hiking trails and forest roads and includes a mix of trail segments, road walking, and looped sections.
The route sequence includes a shuttle drop-off to the Moose Mountain area, a connected hike over Hor, a descent to the CCC Road with a water and aid station at the Willoughby overlook, an ascent of Mount Pisgah to Long Pond, a staffed rest and lunch station at the base of Bald Mountain’s Long Pond Trail, the Haystack loop, and a final ascent and descent on Bald Mountain ending at Mad Brook Road.
Water refill and aid stations are located at the CCC Road overlook, Long Pond trailhead (lunch station), and Mad Brook station. Morning shuttle transport is provided for drop-offs; parking is not allowed at the Moose Mountain start. The event operates under a Vermont state permit that limits participant numbers to reduce erosion.
Possible hike lengths:
- 11.7 miles : half leg to Lunch Station excluding Haystack
- 15.8 miles : half leg to Lunch Station including Haystack
- 20.5 miles : all trails and roads to Mad Brook Road
- 26 miles : full route continuing by road to NorthWoods campus
The event supports NorthWoods conservation and trail maintenance programs and includes staffed safety checks and timing for finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
