The Route

The Westmore Mountain Challenge is a one-day event covering five mountains and approximately 26 miles. The route includes Moose, Hor, Pisgah, Haystack, and Bald mountains. The course uses public trails and roads, with a cumulative elevation gain of about 6,142 feet.

The full marathon distance starts with a shuttle drop-off at the Moose Mountain trailhead. Participants can also choose shorter distances. The options are approximately 11.7 miles (to the lunch station, excluding Haystack), 15.8 miles (to the lunch station, including Haystack), 20.5 miles (all trails and roads to Mad Brook Road), or the full 26 miles to the NorthWoods Lodge without shuttles.

Event Details

Support stations are located along the route, including a water and emergency aid station on the CCC Road, a rest/lunch station at the base of Bald's Long Pond Trail, and a Mad Brook station at the end of the Bald Mountain trail. Water, snacks, and restrooms are available at these points. A shuttle service operates from the lunch station and the Mad Brook station.

The event is a fundraiser for the NorthWoods Stewardship Center, supporting its conservation, forestry, and trail-building work. Registration is limited due to a state permit aimed at preventing trail erosion. Camping is available on the NorthWoods campus for a fee. A food truck provides a meal for participants at the finish.
