Gulch Countdown

The Gulch Countdown is a Last Person Standing trail running event held on a 2.18-mile loop in the Japanese Gulch forest near Mukilteo, Washington. The course features rolling hills through an environment of ferns, moss-draped trees, and cedar trees.

The race format involves running a series of timed loops. The first loop has a 32-minute cutoff to complete it. All runners who finish within the cutoff time start the next loop together, running the loop in the opposite direction. The cutoff time is reduced by one minute for each subsequent loop. After 12 loops (approximately a marathon distance), the cutoff reduction changes to 30 seconds per loop. This continues until only one runner remains, who is declared the Last Person Standing.

A full aid station is provided at the event. $5 from each registration is donated to support improvements for the Japanese Gulch trails. There will also be a competition for the fastest single lap completed by a male and female runner during the event, with special recognition for the winners.

The event is organized by the Japanese Gulch Runners, a local running club focused on building a community for trail runners in Snohomish County. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
