Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra

The Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra is a long-distance running event spanning 57 miles with a total elevation gain of 231 meters. The course connects Scotland's two largest cities, following a route that primarily utilizes canal towpaths and historical trails. Participants navigate a terrain consisting of tarmac, concrete, and developed paths.

The route starts at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow and finishes at the Edinburgh Athletics Track within the Saughton Sports Complex. Along the journey, runners pass several landmarks, including the Falkirk Wheel, the Antonine Wall, and portions of the River Kelvin and the Water of Leith. The course follows Sustrans Route 754, the Forth and Clyde Canal, and the Union Canal.

Distances and Logistics

  • 57 miles: A point-to-point route from Glasgow to Edinburgh with a 16-hour cut-off.

The event features seven checkpoints spaced throughout the route. While all checkpoints provide water, most also offer refreshments such as sandwiches, fruit, and snacks, including vegetarian and vegan options. A live GPS tracking system is used to monitor participant positions for safety and timing.

Participants must meet specific entry criteria, including being at least 20 years of age and having successfully completed at least one organized marathon-distance event prior to race day. Mandatory equipment is required for all runners, including a waterproof coat with sealed seams, a headtorch, a foil blanket, and a mobile phone. A guided 6 km trail run from Milngavie Train Station using headtorches, following parts of the Clyde Coastal Path and West Highland Way. Social group runs with qualified guides, mandatory trail shoes and a headtorch.

A unique five-hour endurance run set in a medieval village. Runners complete as many laps as possible, starting in daylight and finishing under torchlight. Enter solo, in a pair, or as a team of four, with fancy dress strongly encouraged.
