Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon
The Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon takes place on 11 July 2026 and is run over rough woodland singletrack on a point to point course from the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, Minnesota to the Munger Trailhead in Carlton, Minnesota. The distance is 26.2 mi with total ascent of 2,969 ft and descent of 2,566 ft. The course covers one half of the Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultramarathon plus additional miles to reach marathon distance. The event was introduced in 1992 and was renamed in 2013 after its founder.
Aid stations occur at multiple locations along the route, including the start, Becks Road (7.3 mi), Hwy 210 (10.6 mi, water only, no crew), Petersons (17.2 mi, no crew), Jay Cooke (23.4 mi), and the finish at the Munger Trailhead. Stations provide water, electrolyte drink, sodas, fruit, cookies, and salty snacks. Organizers do not supply paper cups or electrolyte supplement capsules. Drop bag service is available at specified stations; bags must be clearly labeled with the runner name and race number at check in.
Crew access is allowed only at designated aid stations and some locations prohibit crew and spectators. Trail markings use hot orange pin flags; if a marker is not visible within about 0.1 miles the runner may be off course. Footing is rugged with roots, rocks, and potentially slippery or missing bridge boards. The race is cupless and runners are expected to carry their own hydration; finish must be achieved within 10 hours. Awards include pottery mugs for the top ten men, women, and nonbinary finishers and medals for all finishers. Registration via Ultrasignup typically opens in March.
