Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultramarathon
The Minnesota Voyageur is a 50 mile trail ultramarathon founded in 1982. The out-and-back course runs from Carlton, MN, through Jay Cooke State Park and heads northeast over rough woodland singletrack toward Duluth and back. The route includes scenic overlooks of Lake Superior and a crossing of the Swinging Bridge over the dalles of the St. Louis River. Total ascent and descent are approximately 5,000 feet.
Aid stations are placed along the course with varying levels of crew access and drop bag service. Some stations are designated no crew and no spectators, including Hwy 210 and Peterson’s. Drinks at aid stations include water, electrolyte drink, and sodas; food options include fruit, cookies, and potato chips. The race is cupless so runners must carry their own drinking vessel. Electrolyte supplement capsules are not provided.
Course markings use hot orange pin flags with NMTC. The footing is primarily rugged singletrack with roots, rocks, and potentially slippery or damaged bridge boards. Runners must be prepared for a wide range of weather; past conditions have included hot, humid years and cool wet years. Drop bags must be labeled with name and race number and will be returned to the finish. Runners must reach the finish within 14 hours. Start and finish facilities and race-day gatherings are at Carlton High School. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
