Elizabeth Furnace 50K
The Elizabeth Furnace 50K is a rocky, technical trail race of 30.5 miles (approximately 50 km) through the northern Massanutten range. The route is primarily mountainous single track with some stretches of fire road, and nearly the entire course is forested. Total ascent and descent is about 6,400 feet.
The course includes two staffed aid stations located at Mudhole Gap (10.3 miles) and Elizabeth Furnace (21.8 miles). Aid on course is limited; runners provide most of their own food and supplies. Runners may leave sealed, labeled food bags for the two aid stations. A GPX file, turnsheet, and map are available for navigation. The course is marked only by trail blazes, so the turnsheet should be used at junctions in addition to any electronic track. The Mudhole Gap section includes five stream crossings that can be significant in some years, and muddy or wet conditions are likely in low areas; snow is also possible in March.
The event is held in late winter, which can produce unpredictable mountain weather. Volunteers staff the aid stations and finish area. Entries are limited for the event. Participants should be prepared for remote conditions and self-supported aid between the two stations, and should expect trail obstacles such as blowdowns under normal conditions.
