CFRA - Wasdale Fell Race

The Wasdale Fell Race is a long-distance mountain running event organized by the Cumberland Fell Runners Association. Located in the heart of the Lake District, the race is a category AL event and is included in the Lakeland Classics Trophy. The course covers approximately 34 km (21.1 miles) with a total ascent of 2,750 m (9,022 ft).

The route starts at Brackenclose and traverses technical mountain terrain including several major summits. Participants visit eight mandatory checkpoints:

  • Whin Rigg
  • Greendale Bridge
  • Seatallan
  • Pillar
  • Great Gable
  • Esk Hause Shelter
  • Scafell Pike
  • Wall on Lingmell Nose

Strict time limits are enforced at specific checkpoints, including Whin Rigg, Seatallan, Pillar, and Great Gable. Runners who do not reach Great Gable within 4.5 hours are required to retired from the race.

Mandatory safety equipment is required for all participants and will be checked before race numbers are issued. This includes a waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams and a hood, hat, gloves, a map of the course area, a compass, a whistle, and emergency food. Additionally, this event serves as a trial for GPS tracking devices; all runners must carry a provided tracker during the race.

Registration and the finish area are located in the field east of the National Trust campsite in Wasdale. Participation is limited to individuals aged 18 and older. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
