Wasdale Fell Race

The Wasdale Fell Race is a long-distance mountain running event organized by the Cumberland Fell Runners Association. The course covers a distance of 34 km (21.1 miles) with a total ascent of 2,750 m (9,022 ft). The race is part of the Lakeland Classics Trophy and takes place in the heart of the Lake District, starting and finishing near Brackenclose in Wasdale.

The route includes multiple mountain checkpoints, including Whin Rigg, Greendale Bridge, Seatallan, Pillar, Great Gable, Esk Hause Shelter, Scafell Pike, and Lingmell Nose. Participants follow a variety of terrain including grassy descents, valley bottoms, and rocky paths. Specific sections between the first and second checkpoints are flagged to protect local farmland.

Due to the nature of the terrain and weather conditions, participants must have strong mountain experience and navigation skills. There are strict time limits at certain locations; runners must reach the Great Gable checkpoint within 4.5 hours to continue the race.

Mandatory Equipment Full FRA kit is required and is checked before race numbers are issued. This includes:

  • Waterproof top and bottoms (taped seams with hood)
  • Hat and gloves
  • Map of the course area and a compass
  • Whistle and emergency food
  • A provided electronic tracking device

The event utilizes the SPORTident race management system, and all participants are provided with pre-logged SI-Cards. Entry fees include light refreshments. Parking and registration are located in the field east of the National Trust campsite at Wasdale Head. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
