South Downs Way 100
The South Downs Way 100 is a 161 km (100 mile) non-stop foot race following the entire South Downs Way National Trail. Now in its 15th year, the course follows a chalk ridgeway through the South Downs National Park, beginning at the Matterley Estate near Winchester and finishing at the Eastbourne Sports Club athletics track.
The terrain consists of approximately 85% trail and 15% road. Participants navigate rolling hills, ancient forts, and picturesque villages, with a total elevation gain of approximately 3,800 meters (12,700 feet). The route is marked with National Trail acorn symbols, supplemented by pink ribbons and directional arrows.
The event features several distance options:
- 161 km (100 miles)
- 5 km (Junior race for ages 12-18)
- 1.6 km (1 mile Kids race for under 12s)
Participants have a 30-hour cut-off time to complete the full distance. The race is supported by 12 aid stations providing hydration, gels, and various sweet and savoury snacks. Medical support is stationed throughout the course, and live tracking is provided for all runners.
To enter the 100 mile event, runners must have completed at least one 80 km (50 mile) race within 15 hours between January 1st, 2020, and the race date. Specific mandatory equipment is required, including a waterproof jacket, survival blanket, and a mobile phone. Pacers are permitted to join runners from the 50 mile mark.
