The Big Pilgrimage
The Big Pilgrimage is a point-to-point mixed terrain running event that follows part of an ancient pilgrim trail known as "The Old Way." This historical route follows coastal and countryside paths from Southampton toward Canterbury. The event offers two distinct distances:
- 15 miles
- Marathon
Both routes begin at Mayflower Park in Southampton. The 15 mile course concludes at the medieval ruins of Titchfield Abbey, while the Marathon finish line is located at Boundary Oak School near Wickham. Along the route, participants pass several historical landmarks including Netley Castle, Netley Abbey, and the Chapel at Royal Victoria Country Park. Runners collect stickers at these locations to complete a unique race bib.
A notable feature of the course is a river crossing at the Hamble foreshore. Participants board vessels for a short boat ride across the Hamble River to Warsash before continuing the run toward Titchfield Haven.
The event requires mandatory kit, including a minimum of 500ml of fluid. Organizers provide a bag drop service at the start, transporting belongings to the respective finish lines. Pre-booked coach transport is available to take runners from the finish locations back to the start in Southampton. Participants have the option to receive a finishers medal or have a tree planted through the Trees Not Tees organization. Canicross entries are not permitted for this event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
