Cappy’s Backyard Ultra at Cathedral Gorge State Park, Panaca, Nevada
Cappy’s Backyard Ultra is a loop-based endurance race held in the group use area of Cathedral Gorge State Park in Lincoln County. Participants run a 4.1667 mile loop each hour and may continue until only one runner completes an extra lap. Each loop must be completed within the hour; failing to finish a loop results in a DNF.
The event uses separate day and night courses. The day loop is roughly 25% road and 75% singletrack with about 292 ft of total climbing and a gradual uphill segment near miles 1.5 to 2.5. The night course is an out-and-back that is about 75% road and 25% dirt road or trail with approximately 117 ft of elevation gain. Both courses are within the state park and will be marked; some small amount of vehicle traffic is possible.
Race rules limit crews to two people at the pit area. Runners must be in the start corral at the top of the hour and start each loop at the sounding of the bell. No pacers or artificial aids such as trekking poles are allowed. Aid is available at the start/finish pavilion only; no aid stations are located along the course.
Amenities at the group area include restrooms, showers, water, dry and tent camping space, two covered pavilions, and power outlets. Entry includes one night of dry camping and day use parking for one vehicle. Registration runs from April 9, 2026 through March 24, 2027 and the entry fee is listed as $95. Awards include a prize for the last runner standing, DNF medals, and participant shirts listing competitors. Packet pickup is available the night before and the morning of the event. No refunds are offered. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
