Event overview

The Cape Wrath Ultra® is a multi-day ultra running event in the Scottish Highlands. The full course covers 400 km over eight days, starting in Fort William and finishing at Cape Wrath. The route passes through Knoydart, Kintail, Torridon, Assynt, and Sutherland. The event is held annually in May. The Cape Wrath Explorer offers a flexible option where participants may choose to do part of the route each day. The Cape Wrath 100 is a separate three-day, 100-mile multi-day challenge along the trail.

Route and distances

The full event is organised as daily stages. Typical stage distances are:

  • Day 1 - 37 km (23 miles)
  • Day 2 - 57 km (35 miles)
  • Day 3 - 68 km (42 miles)
  • Day 4 - 35 km (22 miles)
  • Day 5 - 44 km (27 miles)
  • Day 6 - 72 km (45 miles)
  • Day 7 - 61 km (38 miles)
  • Day 8 - 26 km (16 miles)

Start 2026 with the Aonach Mor Uphill, a thrilling 4 km mountain race climbing 610 m from Nevis Range above Fort William. Take on rugged winter terrain with mandatory waterproof kit, then warm up with soup and stunning summit views.

Take on a rugged 31 mile ultra around Loch Lyon with about 3,500 ft of climbing, river crossings and sweeping Perthshire Highland scenery. Camp by the dam and make a proper weekend running escape.

Run a scenic 15.5 mile loop around Loch Lyon in Perthshire, fully off road with steep climbs, rolling trails and several river crossings that will likely leave feet wet. Finish at Glen Lyon Dam and camp on site for a wild weekend escape.

Take on the Great Glen Ultra, a tough 72 miles from Fort William to Inverness along the spectacular Great Glen Way with 8500 ft of ascent and 4 UTMB points. Expect mixed terrain, marshaled checkpoints and a true self reliant ultra.
