Buena Vista Pack Burro Race, Buena Vista CO, August 2, 2026

The Buena Vista Pack Burro Race is presented as part of the Triple Crown of Pack Burro Racing and offers four race options that pair traditional pack burro teams with running participants as well as options to run without a burro. Entry fees are listed as $75 and increase to $95 after June 1. Packet pickup is scheduled the morning of the event.

Distances

  • 13.1 miles with a burro
  • 13.1 miles without a burro
  • 7.3 miles with a burro
  • 7.3 miles without a burro

Burro categories require a named burro prior to registration; there are no refunds for failure to secure a burro. Burro teams must use a packsaddle loaded with prospector paraphernalia including a pick, gold pan, and shovel; missing items can result in disqualification. The burro must be led with a single lead rope attached to a halter and the lead rope may not exceed 15 feet. Only a burro or donkey may be entered in burro categories; riding is not allowed.

The course includes water stations that issue slap wristbands to verify checkpoints and a decision point where a runner may switch from the long to the short course and must notify race officials of that change. Participants receive a finisher gift and a post race meal. Awards include trophies and gifts for top placings and special recognitions. Rules cover animal welfare, veterinary checks, required waivers, and prohibitions on firearms and abusive handling. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
