Race categories and rules
- 13.1 miles - long course
- 7.3 miles - short course
There are both with-burro and without-burro options for each distance. Water stations issue “slap wristbands” to verify the furthest checkpoint reached: the long course collects bands at Water Stations #1 and #3, short-course teams receive a band at Water Station #3, and Water Station #2 is a decision point where long-course entrants may continue straight to complete the short course without disqualification.
Burro teams must carry a packsaddle with prospector paraphernalia including a pick, gold pan, and shovel; missing or lost items can lead to disqualification. The burro must wear a halter and be handled with a single lead rope not exceeding 15 feet. Teams consist of one runner and one burro; no assistants, swapping burros, riding, or firearms are allowed. Veterinary checks are recommended and out-of-state burros must meet required health documentation. Mistreatment of burros or rule violations may result in disqualification.
