The Sheep Mountain trail runs offer three distances:

  • 50-Mile
  • 50k
  • Half Marathon

The event is limited to 300 runners and has a 16-hour time limit. The start and finish are at Town of Fairplay Beach in Fairplay, CO. Registration for the 2026 edition opens December 1, 2025; online registration closes July 28, 2026 and registrations after July 20, 2026 are not guaranteed a race shirt or finisher's award. Included for participants are a gender specific race shirt, a finisher's medal, and access to well-stocked aid stations.

Course and logistics

The course runs at an average elevation above 10,600 feet and uses a mix of technical singletrack, remote forest service roads, flowing dirt county roads, and USFS fire road (some sections are rocky). Mid-race drop down options are available: 50-Mile starters may drop to the 50k at Brown's Pass Aid Station, and 50-Mile or 50k starters may drop to the Half at the Horseshoe Aid Station (first time through). There is no drop down for the Half distance. Drop bags are allowed at specified aid stations for the 50-Mile and 50k; there are no drop bags for the Half. Pacers and crews are allowed only under specified rules: pacers may assist 50-Mile runners at designated aid stations and only one pacer is permitted at a time. The event operates under permits from USFS Pike National Forest, Park County, the Town of Fairplay, Bureau of Land Management, and private landowners. Average local temperatures: high 70˚, low 43˚.
