Sheep Mountain Trail Runs is the 12th annual edition of an endurance trail event held in Fairplay, Colorado. Distances offered include:
- 50-Mile
- 50k
- Half Marathon
The course has an average elevation over 10,600 ft and uses a mix of technical singletrack, remote forest service roads, flowing dirt county roads, and USFS fire roads (some rocky). The event lists a 16-hour time limit and a runner capacity of 300. The start and finish are at Town of Fairplay Beach in Fairplay, CO.
Logistics and support
The event provides gender-specific race shirts, finisher medals, and well stocked aid stations. Drop bags are allowed for 50-Mile runners at Horseshoe, Watrous, Round Hill, and Pasture; 50k runners may use Horseshoe and Pasture; there are no drop bags for the Half Marathon. Crews and pacers are permitted for the 50-Mile only; pacers may be picked up at Pasture (Mile 36.5) and at Horseshoe on the second time through (Mile 45), and only one pacer is allowed at a time. Spectators are allowed at the start/finish area. A virtual pre-event briefing is held before the race.
The event is permitted by USFS Pike National Forest - South Park Ranger District, Park County, the Town of Fairplay, the Bureau of Land Management, and local private landowners. Weather in early August can be highly variable during Monsoon Season; conditions may include rain, snow, wind, hail, or thunderstorms. Registration for 2026 opens December 1, 2025.
