The Marathon covers the second half of the Xtreme route, starting at Merthyr and joining the ultra route near the halfway checkpoint.

The course is unmarked in places and navigation is by GPS trace; runners must be self-sufficient and carry compulsory kit as listed by the organiser. There are six manned checkpoints on the Xtreme and three on the Marathon, offering water, drinks and snacks.
