Evolution of the Black Canyon Ultras
The Black Canyon Ultras are point-to-point trail races held along the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail in Arizona. The route follows a historic livestock driveway used since 1919, which also parallels portions of an old stagecoach road. Participants traverse the Sonoran Desert, crossing the Agua Fria River and passing through rugged desert landscapes.
The event offers two main race categories:
- 100 km
- 50 km
The 100 km course starts in Spring Valley and finishes at the Emery Henderson Trailhead near New River. It features approximately 5,219 feet of elevation gain and 7,337 feet of loss. The terrain consists of singletrack trail, jeep roads, and rocky technical sections, particularly in the later miles. This distance serves as a qualifying race for the Western States 100, provided runners finish within 17 hours.
The 50 km course also begins in Spring Valley and concludes at Deep Canyon Ranch in Black Canyon City. It includes approximately 2,004 feet of elevation gain and 4,005 feet of loss. The trail is shared with the public, including hikers and mountain bikers.
Aid stations are placed every 4.5 to 9 miles, offering water, electrolytes, and various food options. The event is cupless, requiring participants to carry their own reusable hydration systems. Support crews are permitted at specific aid stations, such as Bumble Bee Ranch and Deep Canyon Ranch. Pacers are allowed only for the 100 km distance starting at mile 31.9.
