Trail Running at Bewl Water
The Bewl Water Summer event features a series of trail races held at the largest lake in South East England. Located near Lamberhurst, Kent, the routes traverse 1,000 acres of countryside within the Kent and Sussex border. Participants run through forested areas and open countryside, with the majority of the course offering views of the reservoir.
The event offers four distinct distances:
- 50 km Ultra Marathon
- 26.2 mile Marathon
- 13.1 mile Half Marathon
- 10 km Run
All routes are primarily off-road, utilizing a combination of undulating rural wooded trails and quiet country lanes. The courses follow a clockwise direction around the reservoir, starting and finishing at the main Bewl Water Visitor Centre. Specific loop configurations vary by distance; for example, the 50 km involves two 12.4-mile loops followed by a final shorter loop, while the 10 km is an out-and-back route with a marshalled turnaround point.
The event provides professional chip timing, and provisional results are uploaded after the race. The course includes well-marked routes and stocked checkpoints maintained by marshals. Participants receive a bespoke race medal upon completion, and slate awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in each category. Professional medical support and photography services are present on-site. The marathon distance has previously been recognized by Runners World as a top UK marathon.
