Beat the Bounds, Patterdale

Beat the Bounds follows the historic parish boundary around Patterdale in Cumbria and offers several event options that follow the mapped parish limits as closely as possible. The event includes technical high-level terrain that uses paths, ridges and some navigational sections; bespoke maps and GPX routes are provided in advance.

Options on offer include running and walking formats plus a family downhill walk. A checkpoint at Kirkstone Pass supplies snacks, hot and cold drinks and supplied nutrition products. Participants are fitted with trackers for location monitoring and to confirm passage of strategic points on the route. Cut off points are applied at Kirkstone Pass and Boredale Hause to support safety and return to the valley. A rolling start is used.

Distances

  • Full Boundary: 28 miles and 10,200 ft ascent
  • 1st Half: 16 miles and 6,500 ft ascent
  • 2nd Half: 14 miles and 3,500 ft ascent
  • Minibeat Downhill: 6 miles via Hartsop Hall

Entry fees differ by distance and include tracker fitting, a bespoke race number, Kirkstone checkpoint provisions and finishers soup and cake. Proceeds support Patterdale Church of England School and St Patrick's Church; entry fees are treated as donations split equally. Residents of Patterdale Parish receive a full discount and a reduced fee is available for members of the Long Distance Walking Association for the full boundary event.
