Ballater Games Hill Race
The Hill Race is part of the Ballater Highland Games held at Monaltrie Park, Ballater, on Thursday 13 August 2026. Entry for the Hill Race is taken on Games Day and competitors should be aware of the published Hill Race briefing.
The route runs twice anti clockwise around the Games arena, then out of the park along Provost Craig road to the A93, turning left to cross the railway bridge and down the main street through the village. The village section must be followed without deviation. Runners cross the bridge over the River Dee and follow a clearly marked recommended route to the summit, run around the cairn and receive a proof stamp, then descend the same route back through the village, rejoin the arena for one lap anti clockwise and finish in front of the Chieftain’s tent.
The recommended route goes directly up the middle of the hill along a well worn path. Underfoot conditions vary and the path narrows in places; runners may need to leave the path to overtake. Race numbers must be displayed clearly for identification. Any runner retiring early must report to a member of the field team immediately upon return to the Games Park. Organisers also note safety rules that prohibit unauthorised entry onto the track or competition area during the Games.
A monetary bonus system applies for new course records and for the ladies record; the bonus increases annually until a record is set up to a defined maximum. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
