Ballater Games Hill Race
Ballater, United Kingdom • 13 Aug 2026
Event Overview
The Ballater Games Hill Race is part of the Ballater Highland Games, held at Monaltrie Park. Entry for the hill race is available on the day of the Games or online.
The Route
The course begins with two laps anti-clockwise around the Games arena. Runners then exit the park and follow Provost Craig Road onto the A93. They turn left, cross a railway bridge, and run down Ballater's main street through the village centre, a route which is not open to deviation.
After crossing a bridge over the River Dee, participants follow a clearly marked recommended route to the summit of the hill. They must run around the cairn at the top, receiving a proof stamp from a race official, before descending via the same path back through the village and into the Games Park. The race finishes with one final lap anti-clockwise of the arena, ending in front of the Chieftain’s tent.
The recommended ascent follows a well-worn path directly up the middle of the hill. The path varies in underfoot conditions and narrows in several places. Slower runners ascending are asked to give way to faster runners descending.
Rules and Information
All participants compete at their own risk. Race numbers must be displayed clearly for identification by commentary and finish line officials. Any runner retiring from the race must report to a field team member immediately upon returning to the Games Park.
