Ȟaȟá Wakpádaŋ Loopet Loppet

The Ȟaȟá Wakpádaŋ Loopet Loppet is a trail event that centers Dakota people, land, and traditions along Ȟaȟá Wakpádaŋ (Bassett Creek). The event takes place at the Trailhead in Theodore Wirth Park and uses a multi-loop course that includes a primary five-mile loop and a one-mile loop.

Participants may compete individually or in relay teams and aim to complete as many laps as possible within the chosen time block. Support on course includes an ultramarathon-style aid station highlighting Dakota foods (examples from 2025 included soup and cookies by Owamni and wild rice blueberry muffins by Powwow Grounds), a Trailhead station with Tail Wind Endurance electrolyte beverage, and a self-serve water station at mile 3 of the five-mile loop.

There are several event formats:

  • 12-hour individual format
  • 6-hour individual format
  • Relay teams of up to four runners
  • 1 Loop Fun Run/Walk (untimed)
  • Little Loopet for kids, about a half mile; free with pre-registration

Pacers are permitted with limits on number per runner and age-based restrictions. Relay team exchanges must occur between loops. Recommended parking is at Mortenson Parking Lot (700 Meadow Ln N); limited parking is available at the Trailhead. Bicycle parking and bus access (Number 7 route) are noted for alternative transport. Winners receive a pumpkin decorated by Little Loopet participants. Event proceeds support the Loppet Foundation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
