Ȟaȟá Wakpádaŋ Loopet Loppet : event description

The Ȟaȟá Wakpádaŋ Loopet Loppet is a trail event on October 17, 2026 that highlights Dakota people, land, and traditions along Ȟaȟá Wakpádaŋ, the Dakota name for Bassett Creek, loosely translated as "Falls Creek." All events start and finish at the Trailhead in Theodore Wirth Park.

The main formats are a 12-hour and a 6-hour looped run or hike, available to individuals or relay teams of up to four. Participants complete as many laps of a multi-mile loop as they can during their chosen time window. The event also includes an untimed 1-loop fun run/walk and a free Little Loopet for kids on a short loop; preregistration is required for the youth loop.

Course and services

  • 5 mile loop used for main event laps
  • 1 mile loop available as an alternate shorter option
  • 0.5 mile Little Loopet for children

An ultramarathon-style aid station operates between loops and emphasizes Dakota foods; examples from previous years included soups and wild rice muffins. A Trailhead aid station offers an electrolyte beverage and a self-serve water station is located around mile 3 of the 5-mile loop. Pacers are permitted and each runner may have a single pacer at a time. Relay exchanges may occur only between loops.

Logistics and community Parking is concentrated at Mortenson Parking Lot with limited Trailhead parking; extra bike racks will be available and a local bus route serves the Trailhead. Registration opens in 2026; fees and processing charges are non-refundable and registrations are not transferable. Proceeds support the Loppet Foundation. Winners receive a pumpkin decorated during the event by Little Loopet participants. Volunteers support multiple roles and receive event swag and snacks.
