Zanfel Orienteering Race

The Zanfel Orienteering Race is an adventure sports event held at Branched Oak Lake in Raymond, Nebraska. Participants navigate through the terrain on the north side of the lake, specifically covering the area from Liebers Point across to Areas 3, 4, 7, and 8. The event is structured as a land navigation competition where participants use a pre-plotted map and a set of clues to locate checkpoints scattered throughout the woods.

Registration is open for different divisions, including solo participants and teams of 2 or 3 people. Team categories are available for coed, male, and female groups. The format allows for both running and hiking, and participants have the option to carry a weighted pack to perform a ruck during the event. The course has a strict 4 hour time limit. Participants must return with their punch cards recorded; teams arriving late will be penalized by losing one checkpoint for every five minutes past the cutoff.

Required gear for the race includes:

  • A compass
  • A gallon ziplock bag or map case
  • A cell phone
  • A light pack for hydration and snacks

The registration fee covers the provision of shirts, snacks, drinks, and awards for participants. Competitors receive their maps, punch cards, and clue sheets at the event location. While traditional navigation tools are used, teams are also permitted to use the Handy GPS app to assist with their movement across the course.
