Yakima Skyline 25K
The Yakima Skyline 25K is a point-to-point out-and-back trail race held outside Ellensburg, Washington in the Yakima River Canyon on lands that were part of the ancestral home of the Yakama people. The route runs through a high desert, rainshadow environment with exposed ridge lines, sagebrush, and sections of lush river canyon near the finish.
The course is 25 kilometers with about 4,700 feet of elevation gain and loss. It is mostly single-track and rocky, with segments on a rough jeep road. Runners climb more than 2,100 feet in just over two miles early in the route, descend steep technical trails into the river valley, and return the same way. The trail is marked with yellow and black arrow signs at junctions and checkered confidence ribbons about every half mile.
There are two aid stations: one full station at Roza (mile 8) and one minimal station near mile 12.5. All participants must be able to carry at least 32 ounces of water on course; failure to meet this requirement leads to disqualification. Cutoff policies include an overall 8 hour limit and aid-station cutoffs.
The start/finish is on private riverfront property with free primitive camping for tents and small RVs (maximum 25 feet), portable toilets, and no potable water or electrical hookups. Parking is staged at a nearby gravel overflow lot; the main Umtanum day-use paved lot must remain open for other day users. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
