The Coal Miner is a self-supported trail running event. It takes place in the mountains near Roslyn, Washington. The course starts and finishes at Roslyn Pioneer Park.
Course Details
The route covers 51.3 miles. It involves a significant amount of climbing, between 10,100 and 11,300 feet. The unmarked course connects Cle Elum Ridge with Sasse Ridge. It includes summits of Hex, Sasse, and Jolly Mountains. Runners descend Jolly Creek to the Middle Fork of the Teanaway River, follow it downstream, and then use the Big Sandy Trails to return to the top of Cle Elum Ridge and back to Roslyn.
Requirements and Format
The event is designed for self-sufficient runners. There is minimal aid and no course markings. Participants must carry a satellite messenger (like an inReach) with an active subscription. A prerequisite for entry is completion of a hard trail 100k or longer race. Runners must use provided GPX tracks for navigation. Official finish times depend on submitting summit selfies and a GPX track to verify the full course was completed. The total time cutoff is 16 hours.
