Winter Deception Pass 50K and 25K - Rainshadow Running

This trail event takes place in Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands in northern Puget Sound. The courses run along coastal bluffs, steep cliffs, dense forest and shoreline, and cross the Deception Pass Bridge twice, a historic span about 180 feet above the water. Both races start at the West Point Amphitheater and follow park roads briefly before moving onto mostly single track trails that vary between smooth sections and rocky, rooty technical footing. Hills are generally short but can be steep.

Distances offered:

  • 50K with about 4,300 ft elevation gain and four aid stations.
  • 25K with about 3,000 ft elevation gain and one aid station.
  • 1K Fun Run for kids, minimal elevation.

Aid stations provide water, electrolyte drink, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips, pickles, cookies or candy, gels, first aid supplies and feminine hygiene products. Drop bags are allowed at specified aid stations and a finish-area bag option is available. Course markings include arrow signs and confidence ribbons; volunteers track runners at aid stations and cutoffs are enforced to maintain the permit and park schedule. Dogs are allowed if well behaved and leashed. Parking in the park requires a Discover Pass, and there is no overnight parking at the West Beach start/finish area. Financial assistance for registration may be available through an external fund for eligible applicants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
