Widdop Fell Race

Widdop Fell Race

Widdop is a high moorland fell race run over marked paths that include some tussocks and areas of chest high bracken. The course is waymarked with flags but visibility can be poor in mist, so competitors should expect navigation to be more difficult in low cloud.

The course distance is approximately 7 miles (11.3 km) with about 366 m (1200 ft) of climb. The event is categorised as BM and takes place in the South/West Pennines on 8 July 2026. The venue is listed as the Packhorse Inn (The Ridge), Widdop, grid reference SD952316; the pub is now closed and registration is run from the car park.

The race is licensed by the Fell Runners Association under UK Athletics rules and is designated a non GPS race. Competitors may use a GPS device to record their route but electronic devices must not be used for navigation except in an emergency. If GPS functions are used to navigate to safety the runner must declare themselves non competitive at the finish.

Pre entry is handled via SiEntries with pre entry fees listed as £5.00 for FRA members and £7.50 for non members. Entry on the day may be available up to the race limit of 120. Minimum age is 18 years.

Mandatory minimum kit may be required depending on the weather. Required items include waterproof full body cover consisting of waterproof trousers and a waterproof jacket with taped seams, a hat, gloves, map, compass and whistle. A kit check is carried out before numbers are issued. The current female course record is 57:48 set in 2016 on the revised route introduced from 2013.
