West Highland Way Challenge Race

The West Highland Way Challenge Race is an annual point to point ultra trail event that follows the West Highland Way from Fort William to Milngavie. The standard course is 96 miles with about 14,700 feet of ascent. An optional extension adds Ben Nevis, increasing the distance to 107 miles and the total ascent to about 19,175 feet.

The race is organised with support along the route. Food and drink are provided at nine locations and race trackers are issued so competitors can be followed during the event. Entrants may use two race drop bags placed at Bridge of Orchy (about 35 miles) and Rowardennan (about 68 miles) and a finish bag for Milngavie; drop bags are returned at the finish. The organisers also transport competitors who withdraw from check points to the finish.

Cut off times are set to an average walking speed of 2.7 mph, based on completing the 96 mile course in 35 hours. The route is waymarked and junctions are assisted by more than 100 reflectors for navigation. All finishers receive a boxed crystal goblet; runners who complete the 96 mile course in under 24 hours receive a personalised keyring and membership of the West Highland Way In A Day Club. Three trophies are awarded to the first three finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
