The Great Glen Ultra Marathon is a point-to-point ultramarathon along the Great Glen Way from Fort William (start at Corpach) to Inverness (finish at Inverness Athletics Stadium). The published distance is 72 miles with approximately 8,500 ft of ascent and the event carries 4 UTMB points. The route is waymarked and includes canal towpaths, forestry paths, tracks and some road sections. The race is for solo runners and is designed to be run unsupported, with marshaled checkpoints and drop-bag access.
Route, checkpoints and rules
The route follows the Caledonian Canal and the waymarked Great Glen Way, including the High Route option and views over Loch Ness. Mandatory equipment must be carried for the whole event and will be confirmed in the pre-race briefing; required items include a foil blanket, a working mobile phone with race control saved, and a means to carry at least 1 litre of water. Checkpoints are approximately every 10 miles. Published checkpoint points and cut-offs include Clunes (10.5 miles), Laggan Locks (20 miles), Fort Augustus (31 miles), Invermoriston (40 miles), Drumnadrochit (54.5 miles), Loch Laide (62 miles) and the finish (72 miles). Race rules prohibit transfer of places, muling, walking poles, support runners/bike buddies and dogs, and restrict where support crews may meet runners. The event operates under Scottish Athletics licence and has specific Covid-19 protocols. Entry fees are shown as £118/£120 and total places are limited (150).
