West 100 - Whythra Bys Vyken 100 milers
West 100 is a team-based 100 mile trail event in Cornwall where groups of five runners complete self-navigated coastal or trail routes. Current routes include Bude to Gwithian, Coverack to Porthtowan and Plymouth Sound to Coverack. The run must be completed within 36 hours.
Entry is subject to qualifying requirements: completion of a 100k event in under 20 hours and prior experience of night running. Organisers aim to match team capabilities and require honesty about ability. Each runner must provide an emergency contact able to collect them if they retire.
Logistics and crew support are provided from a central base. Runners are transported from the base to the start and returned from the finish. A crew meets teams approximately every 5 to 6 miles, offers water, Pepsi, sweets, crisps and simple hot food, and will transport runners around ferry crossings where necessary. Runners supply their own primary nutrition; on-course supplies are supplementary. Participants may bring one box of gear or food (50 x 50 x 40 cm) or use a provided box.
A mandatory kit list includes items such as a quality waterproof jacket (10000 mm minimum) with taped seams, windproof over trousers, hydration system (1 l minimum), headtorch (200 lumens minimum) with spare batteries, bivvy bag, first aid kit and £20 emergency money. Medical incidents are handled by the crew, who hold first aid qualifications. If a major medical incident occurs or if the Met Office issues an Amber or Red weather warning, the event may be cancelled, rescheduled or held virtually.
Each entry costs £110 non refundable; refunds may be offered only if a replacement entry is found. Runners who complete the event receive a Whythra Bys Vyken 100 miler buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
