Vallecito Lake Heavy Half

The Vallecito Lake Heavy Half is a loop race that circles Vallecito Reservoir in the San Juan Mountains. The course runs approximately 14 miles with about 1,000 feet of climbing and includes a mix of surfaces: about four miles of paved road, 3.5 miles of trails, and 6.5 miles of dirt or gravel road. The route crosses Vallecito Dam and includes a roughly 0.5 mile segment over private property where runners must remain on the designated right of way. The 2026 route is run clockwise and retains a single track segment along the east shore.

The event is limited to 250 runners and offers a waitlist when entries sell out. The organizers operate as a cupless event; runners are asked to carry their own water bottle or soft flask. Durango Running Club members receive a 10 percent membership discount when registered and logged into the race platform.

There are four aid stations beginning around mile 3.5 providing water and Tailwind; the last three stations also offer snacks. Vault toilets are located near miles 2.5, 8.5, and 12.5 and additional porta potties are at the start and finish. A 4 hour time limit is in place; runners expected to be slower than this must carry their own water and a phone.

Parking requires a valid PRID use pass. Vehicles must park in the Vallecito Church lot or the PRID open space; parking in front of local businesses is prohibited. Vehicles are not allowed on the private road and spectators may not follow runners by car.

Course markings include mile markers and signage at turns. Runners should stay on the right shoulder of roads, obey marshals and law enforcement, not wear headphones in both ears, and note that dogs and strollers are not permitted. County sheriffs are posted at the CR501 and FR603 intersection for traffic control.

Timing is provided by a professional timing company using an RFID chip on the back of the race bib; bibs should be worn on the front of the body. Results are posted on RunSignUp after the event. Medical support includes first aid at aid stations and ambulance and EMS services through the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District.

Post race amenities for entrants include a custom printed performance long sleeve shirt, a unique finisher prize, a lunch provided by the Rocky Mountain General Store with local beer or soda options, free race photos, and live music by the One Heart Orchestra. The event raises funds for local nonprofits with revenue above event costs directed to charitable causes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
