Kennebec Mountain Run
Durango, United States • 1 Aug 2026
Event overview
The Kennebec Mountain Run is scheduled for August 1, 2026 at La Plata City Campground in Hesperus, Colorado. The event is a 15-mile trail race through the La Plata Mountains with approximately 3,100 feet of elevation gain and a high point near 12,200 feet at Kennebec Pass. The race benefits La Plata County Search & Rescue and requires all participants to hold an active Colorado Search & Rescue (CORSAR) Card. The event is limited to 150 runners. The race operates under a special use permit from the USFS Columbine Ranger District and La Plata County. The organizers state a no-refund policy for entries; if the entire event is cancelled, options to defer to the following year or request a partial refund will be offered.
Course and logistics
For 2026 the course will run counterclockwise; the event switches direction each year (clockwise in odd years, counterclockwise in even years). There is one aid station at The Fork that runners pass twice (mile 4.2 and mile 10.4). The aid station provides water and Tailwind; runners must carry their own hydration system and the organizers do not plan to provide cups. The terrain is alpine and rugged, and first-responder access may be limited by course conditions; participants are responsible for their own evacuation if needed. Parking at La Plata City Campground is extremely limited, so carpooling or alternative parking is encouraged. Awards include pies for the top three overall male and female finishers.
