Kennebec Mountain Run

The Kennebec Mountain Run is a non-profit trail race held in Hesperus, Colorado, with start and finish at La Plata City Campground on County Road 124. The primary distance is a 15 mile mountain course that runs through the La Plata Mountains.

The course gains approximately 3,100 feet in elevation and reaches about 12,200 feet at Kennebec Pass. Runners pass through alpine terrain with views of the Animas River and Dolores River valleys and areas of alpine wildflowers. The route runs on rugged mountain trails and changes direction by year: clockwise in odd years and counterclockwise in even years.

There is one aid station at The Fork that participants pass twice, located near mile 4.2 and mile 10.4; it provides water and Tailwind. Participants must carry their own hydration system; organizers do not plan to provide cups. First responders may be present but evacuation times can be affected by mountain terrain.

The event is capped at 150 runners and operates as a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting La Plata County Search and Rescue. Participants are required to have an active Colorado Search and Rescue card. The race runs under a special use permit from the USFS Columbine Ranger District and La Plata County. Parking at the campground is limited and carpooling is requested. Emergency cutoffs may be enforced for safety. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
