Kennebec Mountain Run

Durango, United States • 1 Aug 2026

Event overview

The Kennebec Mountain Run is a non-profit trail race held at La Plata City Campground in Hesperus, Colorado. The 2026 edition is scheduled for August 1. Established in 2001, the event donates proceeds to La Plata County Search & Rescue and operates under a special use permit from the USFS Columbine Ranger District and La Plata County. Entry is capped at 150 runners. Refunds, deferrals, and transfers are not offered except in the event of a full cancellation, when a deferral or partial refund option may be provided.

Course and logistics

The course distance is 15 miles on mountain trails with approximately 3,100 feet of elevation gain and a high point near 12,200 feet at Kennebec Pass. Course direction alternates by year: clockwise in odd years and counterclockwise in even years. There is one aid station (The Fork) that runners pass twice, at about mile 4.2 and mile 10.4; it provides water and Tailwind. Participants must carry their own hydration systems; cups are not planned.

Bib pickup is offered at Durango Running Company (evening before) and at La Plata Campground (morning of the event); there is no race-day entry. Parking at La Plata City Campground is very limited; organizers request carpooling and provide directions from Durango. First responders will be available, but evacuation response may be affected by rugged terrain. Awards include pies for the top three overall male and female finishers; additional post-race food and drink are provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
