Kennebec Mountain Run
The Kennebec Mountain Run is a 15-mile trail race in the La Plata Mountains near Hesperus, Colorado. The course gains about 3,100 feet and reaches a high point near 12,200 feet at Kennebec Pass. The event emphasizes alpine scenery, including views of the Animas and Dolores River valleys and alpine wildflowers. The race has been held since 2001 and operates as a nonprofit with proceeds benefiting La Plata County Search & Rescue.
Course and logistics
The course direction alternates by year: clockwise in odd years and counterclockwise in even years. There is a single aid station at The Fork that runners pass twice, at approximately mile 4.2 and mile 10.4; the aid station supplies water and Tailwind. Participants must carry their own hydration system; cups are not planned. The event runs under a special use permit from the USFS Columbine Ranger District and La Plata County.
Registration is limited to 150 runners and entries are nonrefundable; if the entire event is cancelled, the organizers will offer a deferral or a partial refund option. Parking at La Plata City Campground is very limited, so organizers request carpooling or alternative parking options. The organizers reserve the right to impose an emergency course cut-off for safety; failing to comply may lead to disqualification and future event bans. Awards include pies for the top three overall male and female finishers and a raffle and post-race refreshments. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
